14TU Vertical Pump for Iron Ore Tailings Transfer

Project Background

At an iron ore concentrator, milled slurry and thickened tailings must be drawn from a collecting sump    and pushed to the next stage. Because the duty draws from a sump rather than a flooded suction, a    vertical (submerged) pump was the natural choice for the transfer point.

Operating Duty

  • Pump size: 14TU vertical slurry pump

  • Flow: approximately 900–1,100 m³/h at normal draw

  • Head: about 18–24 m to clear the sump and reach the transfer line

  • Solids: iron ore tailings with a coarse, settled fraction building up at the sump floor

Matec Solution

We supplied the 14TU vertical pump wet-end assembly together with a spare impeller and column section.    The liner material was matched to the duty — rubber-lined internals where the stream is fine and lower    impact, with metallic wear parts specified for the most abrasive reaches of the sump draw. The    submerged configuration removed the need for a separate suction arrangement at the sump.

Result

The sump level stayed controllable through peak draw periods and manual clearing of the sump reduced    compared with the previous arrangement. The site continues to order replacement wet-end sets on its    normal maintenance cycle.
