450 Pump for Iron Ore Concentration

Project Background

An iron ore processing plant was running its concentration and tailings line on equipment originally    selected for a lower duty. After the plant expanded throughput, the pumps began to show accelerated    impeller wear, more frequent gland maintenance, and a noticeable drop in line pressure during peak    shifts.

Operating Duty

  • Pump size: 450-class horizontal slurry pump (10×8 frame)

  • Flow: approximately 800–900 m³/h on a typical operating day

  • Head: about 35–40 m, peaking above 45 m during peak shift

  • Slurry: 35%–45% by weight, relatively coarse with regular oversize

Matec Solution

We supplied high-chrome metallic wet-end parts (A05-equivalent grade) for the 450 pump, matched to    the coarse particle distribution. Each unit was paired with a spare impeller and a full set of    liners so the maintenance team could complete a single-end refurbishment inside a planned shutdown.    Greased-for-life bearings were used where possible to reduce manual service on a lean maintenance    roster.

Outcome & Customer Feedback

After the first installation cycle, the maintenance team reported noticeably longer intervals between    impeller replacements compared with the original equipment, and suction behavior improved because the    parts were selected closer to the actual operating duty. The same order later expanded as additional    tailings capacity was added.
