When specifying a new slurry pump — or reviewing an existing one that is wearing too quickly — the lining material is often the first decision to lock down. In our experience with mineral processing and dredging applications, the choice between metal and rubber is rarely about which is "better" in absolute terms. It is about which is better matched to a specific combination of particle size, slurry concentration, pH and impact load.
The table below summarizes the situations where each lining family is usually the more appropriate starting point. We use it as a quick reference when we talk to operators evaluating pump retrofits.

Two practical observations from real cases we have supplied:
Plants running tailings lines with relatively fine particle distribution frequently switch from metal to rubber and report noticeable improvements in wear life, but only after confirming that particle size and pH are inside the rubber's working window.
Coarse concentrate lines that originally ran on rubber tend to fail by cutting rather than gradual wear. For these, moving to high-chrome liners — including Warman® compatible equivalents — usually resolves the issue.
