Extending Slurry Pump Impeller Service Life: 5 Field-Proven Practices

For mining operators and mineral processing plants, slurry pump impellers are typically the highest-wear    component in the whole pump assembly. Because the impeller directly contacts the solids in the slurry,    even small improvements in wear life can translate into meaningful reductions in downtime, spare-part    spend and labor cost.

Drawing on feedback from our customers running horizontal slurry pumps in iron ore, copper concentrate    and sand washing applications, we summarize a few practices that, in our experience, help operators    extend impeller service life on a consistent basis.

1. Match the impeller material to the actual duty

High chrome white iron (typically 27% Cr or higher) tends to perform better in coarse, sharp-edged slurries    and in high-head duties. Rubber-lined impellers, on the other hand, usually show better wear behavior in    fine particle slurries below a certain size and where impact load is not dominant. Selecting the wrong    material often leads to premature impeller failure even when the hydraulic duty looks correct on paper.

2. Keep operating conditions close to the BEP

Running a slurry pump far from its Best Efficiency Point — for example at very low flow, very high    flow, or at a head much lower than design — increases recirculation and uneven wear on the impeller    vanes. For most heavy-duty mining applications, operating within roughly 80%–110% of the design duty    is a reasonable target.

3. Maintain suction conditions

Cavitation and vortex formation at the suction side accelerate impeller wear faster than normal abrasion.    Suction pipe design, submergence depth, air-tight feeding and a properly sized suction liner all matter.    In retrofit projects we have seen pumps gain noticeable wear-life simply because the suction side was    corrected.

4. Inspect and rotate on schedule

Periodic inspection — usually at every major shutdown — allows the maintenance team to identify which    vanes are wearing unevenly and to rotate or replace parts before a sudden failure interrupts production.    We typically suggest combining impeller inspection with volute liner, throat bush and shaft sleeve    checks, since they wear together.

5. Stock critical spare parts on site

For continuous-duty plants, having impellers, volute liners, throat bushes and frame plate liners    available on site avoids multi-week shutdowns while waiting for replacements. This is especially    valuable for customers using aftermarket parts, where response time can vary across suppliers.
