One pattern shows up often when we are asked to look at a pump that "wears out too fast": the unit is simply running far from where it was designed to run. The pump may be perfectly good. The duty moved — a new stage was added, the pipeline changed, the ore got harder — and nobody re-checked the operating point.
Off-BEP operation has a signature. Impeller vanes wear unevenly instead of evenly. Suction-side damage appears even when the discharge looks fine. Vibration creeps up. None of these are fixed by fitting a heavier impeller; the next one wears the same way.
The cheaper fix is usually on the system side: trimming or opening a valve, re-confirming the duty point, sometimes re-selecting the impeller profile. We have seen plants gain noticeable wear life just by correcting suction conditions or moving the operating point back toward the pump's efficient window — no new pump required.
The lesson we repeat to customers: before blaming the part, check whether the pump is actually running where it should. A ten-minute review of the duty point often explains a six-month wear problem.
