Running slurry pumps on a remote site changes the maintenance calculus completely. When the nearest replacement part is a sea voyage away and the local workshop has limited capacity, "run to failure" stops being an option.
The sites that cope best tend to share a few habits. They keep clean spare-part records so the right impeller is on the shelf, not just any impeller. They do inspection on a fixed calendar tied to planned shutdowns, not when something breaks. And they treat the bearing assembly and the wet end as one service event, opening both together.
They also tend to standardize. Running five pump sizes instead of fifteen means five spare sets to manage instead of fifteen, and a maintenance team that actually knows each unit. Where the duty allows, standardization is one of the highest-return decisions a remote plant can make.
We have supplied sites where the entire strategy was "one proven pump family, held in depth, serviced on schedule." It is not exciting, but it is why those plants rarely make the news for downtime.
